Eumir Deodato - Whirlwinds (1974)

"Having signed a presumably lucrative deal with MCA, Deodato took with him the jazz- Latin-funk-with-a-taste-of-the-classics formula that he perfected with CTI. But there was a sonic price to pay, for MCA's flat, lackluster sound takes a lot of the sheen and color away from Deodato's arrangements and the sound of his electric piano. As a result, this record sounds like a washed-out, black-and-white facsimile of a Deodato CTI record, with one classical adaptation (Schubert's "Ave Maria"), a fairly good reworking of Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade," and three Deodato originals, of which only "Whirlwinds" has a headful of steam. The large orchestra and band are populated by the usual mid-'70s assortment of New York sessionmen and women, along with the ubiquitous John Tropea, but there are few solos worth mentioning outside of Deodato's own funky Rhodes displays."

Larry Coryell - Bolero (1983)

Stomu Yamashta, Steve Winwood, Michael Shrieve - Go (1976)

"Stomu Yamashta up to this point had gained great respect for his compositional skills in various styles of music ranging from Soundtracks to Jazz to Classical to Rock. In 1976 he formed this group with a line up that reads like a who’s who of jazz and progressive rock musicians. Traffic’s Steve Winwood, Tangerine Dream’s Klaus Schulze, Michael Shrieve from Santana, Return to Forever’s Al DiMeola… This is almost like a jazz progger’s dream team!
The mood is a little less jazzy and more space rock than expected, considering the players involved. Orchestration from Paul Buckmaster contributes to this aspect of the piece greatly. Originally two sides of vinyl listing songs separately but merged together, the album is a full-blown concept piece that is superbly performed.

Vocalist Steve Winwood is in fine form here, predating his later mega successful solo career. Al DiMeola’s guitar work is amazing as always. Michael Shrieve kicks some major drums all over the place and seems responsible along with DiMeola for the Latin-influenced Santana-like passages here and there. The keyboard players, Yamashta and Schulze, are the real stars here as the spacey nature of the piece is naturally driven by the synthesizers.

There are passages that play games with time signatures (a 4/4 gets arranged to a 3/8, 3/8, 2/8 triplet, very worthy of note) and it gets funky at times like good jazz-fusion of the period (ie: Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jeff Beck). I have only one complaint about the way that the songs work into one another. Instead of finding a way to make the segues work from song to song, the band often just chooses to fade out and fade in the next song at the same time. This does not make it as cohesive a progressive rock epic as it could have been. I also understand a decision was made to make the second half of the piece the first part of the album. This may make better musical sense, but makes the story (such as it is) a lot harder to follow. They of course remedied this in concert, but to me it is a gaffe that is forever unrectifiable.

Let’s see… who to recommend this to… Jazz fans of course will want to hear DiMeola and Shrieve at the top of their game. Fans of spacey music like Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream will want to hear this certainly. Rock fans that enjoy Winwood’s gorgeous tenor will like this as well. Appeals to some or none, depending on your preference of music. It definitely appeals to me."

Steely Dan - Gaucho (1980)

"Este disco teve a difícil tarefa de suceder o maravilhoso ''Aja'' (1977) que além de belíssimo vendeu muito bem, e assim sendo talvez pairasse uma pequena dose de pressão sob a dupla Becker-Donald. Pelo tempo que os caras demoravam para registrar um disco, e a maneira como trabalhavam na época, sem grandes viagens (em virtude de não excursionarem tanto), o tempo para ficar em estúdio era enorme, e com isso os caras podiam deixar tudo EXATAMENTE do jeito que queriam, e escutando este disco, e outros desta época o sentimento de satisfação atinge o ápice, tudo parece perfeito, você escuta e pensa : ''Se mexer estraga''.
    
Você deve ter reparado no tamanho da lista de músicos que tocam neste disco, é de fato um verdadeiro absurdo, mas quem gosta e conhece esses dois sabe que foi sempre assim, os melhores músicos (não só de estúdio) sempre estavam tocando com eles, mesmo que demorasse 2 anos para acabar de gravar e enfim lançar o disco valia a pena, afinal de contas ia constar no seu curriculum que você emprestou seu Groove a dois dos maiores gênios da música, que é bom que se diga deveriam ser bem chatos para se trabalhar...

Esse disco é um dos meus preferidos dentro da discografia da banda. Os arranjos são maravilhosos, e o Jazz entra com o requinte de um prato principal, sem tanto alarde ou singles como o disco anterior (''Aja''), mas com a qualidade suprema e indiscutível dos grandes clássicos do grupo.

Veja por exemplo a faixa que inaugura esta bolacha, ''Babylon Sisters''. O arranjo é um absurdo, você nota o capricho em cada nota, a classe oriunda do Jazz, os vocais de Fagen, aliás sua melhor apresentação neste aspecto é na próxima faixa, 'Hey Nineteen'', nessa ele arrebenta, e depois que Becker começar a performar mais um daqueles solos espíritas a viagem começa...

O senhor Becker aliás é um músico muito injustiçado, e depois de anos ouvindo esses caras me pergunto por que... Suas linhas são únicas, o jeito inventivo e EXTREMAMENTE criativo como soava ou tocava certas melodias... Parece até fácil quando vemos o cara tocando, e o estrago que ele faz em ''Glamour Profession'' e na faixa título deste trabalho são duas provas claríssimas de suas habilidades.

Esse disco é maravilhoso, o único problema dele é que ele muito curto, quando você começa a fritar mesmo já estamos em ''Time Out Of Mind'', temos a riqueza dos metais, os belíssimos backing vocals, a beleza do marfim de Fagen... Sempre me pergunto por que ninguém fala desses caras hoje em dia, você já viu algum clipe deles na MTV ? Deve ter sido por isso que faliu, faltava classe pra esses caras.

Duvido E MUITO que se eles tocassem faixas com a beleza de ''My Rival'' ou do suspense profundo de ''Third World Man'' que eles não estariam abertos ainda, por que o mundo realmente necessita conhecer esses sons, a plenitude, a qualidade, e mais importante, a profundidade deste som é fantástica... Que disco !"

Weather Report - Procession (1983)

Procession is the thirteenth studio album from Weather Report. It is the first album to feature the newest lineup of Weather Report. Victor Bailey replaced Jaco Pastorius as the bassist and Omar Hakim replaced Peter Erskine as the drummer. José Rossy was also added to the line up as percussionist. Omar Hakim is credited with finding Bailey and Rossy, they were all signed with Weather Report before Zawinul or Shorter even met them. This is one of the band's finest albums according to many fans and critics.

Larry Coryell - Philip Catherine: Twin House (77)

"I heard Larry Coryell and Philip Catherine together for the first time at the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1975. Their creative compability, the enthusiasm and mutual understanding inspired me to take them into the Olympic Sound Studios in London to cut "Twin House" in just one day. This was only possible because both the music and the artists were ready to go on.

"Twin House" became one of those rare jazz records well recieved by both the record buying public and the critics. Two years later we were back in the studio recording the "Splendid Sessions".

Both records were never before released on CD. I am grateful to the artists an my ex-colleagues at WEA, Germany, to let me release what I believe is the best of "Twin House" and "Splendid" on my ACT label. "Mortgage of Your Soul" was taken off and replaced by the previously unreleased track "Dance Dream".

This record is dedicated to the memory of the great gipsy guitar player Django Reinhardt." (Liner notes by producer Siegfried Loch)
